Neutra Open House: VDL Studio and Residences (Preservation Next)

Description

Join Preservation Next for a tour of the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences

Location

2300 Silver Lake Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90039

Date & Time

Wednesday, June 10 at 5:30 p.m.

Join the Santa Monica Conservancy on Wednesday, June 10, at 5:30 PM for a special Preservation Next tour of the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences, one of Los Angeles’ most significant modernist landmarks.

While the Conservancy’s work is rooted in Santa Monica, preservation does not stop at city limits. Through Preservation Next, we explore the broader architectural, cultural, and preservation stories that connect Santa Monica to greater Los Angeles, and this tour offers a rare opportunity to experience one of the region’s most influential modernist sites.

Designed by Richard Neutra as his experimental home and studio, VDL became a place where ideas about architecture, climate, light, landscape, and modern living were tested and refined. Today, the house is stewarded by Cal Poly Pomona’s College of Environmental Design and Department of Architecture, continuing its role as a site for education, preservation, and public engagement.

Our tour will be led by Director Noam Saragosti, who will share insight into the history of the house, its ongoing care, and why this landmark continues to matter today. After the tour, we’ll continue the conversation nearby over drinks at The Red Lion Tavern.

Preservation Next is an affinity group of the Santa Monica Conservancy. We build space for the next generation of preservationists working in any field to connect and engage in interdisciplinary discussion around the role of historic preservation in Santa Monica's urban fabric through various events, architectural experiences, and volunteer opportunities.
