Santa Monica Mosaic returns September 27 with a special two-part livestream series, Final Approach: The Past and Future of Santa Monica Airport.
"Where Legends Took Flight" traces the historic airport's evolution from its Clover Field origins to the present day. First, we’ll take a look at the moments that cemented Santa Monica's impact on global aviation, from the first successful flight around the world and the first Women's "Powder Puff" Air Derby, to the development of the Douglas DC-3 that revolutionized commercial air travel. Our featured guests will then reflect on the airport's lasting impact on our local community: the growth of the onsite artist colony, the origins of the Ninety-Nines women pilots' organization, and the 1983 gathering of volunteer pilots who set out to fly families in need of medical care, regardless of distance.
Host Libby Motika welcomes Nina Fresco, historian and author of First Around the World, Gregg Chadwick, airport artist-in-residence, and Cheri Cimmarrusti, associate executive director at Angel Flight West, for a lively conversation illustrated with historic photographs of the pioneering pilots, designers, engineers, and workers who helped make aviation history in Santa Monica.
